Four Tips for Getting Your Child Comfortable with a Pediatric Nurse

June 19, 2018 By J&D Ultracare

Something that’s extremely important to us at J&D Ultracare is the health of our children. That’s why we’re proud to be the first and only agency in the Hudson Valley dedicated to providing pediatric services. Our nurses strive to provide infants, children, and adolescents the care that they need to live happy and healthy lives.

However, visiting a pediatric nurse can be difficult for a child to do, especially if they have never seen one before! That’s why we decided to write an article on the topic on Rockland County NearSay. If you’ve never been to NearSay, it’s a great publication that allows us to educate the public on the nursing services we provide. Because J&D Ultracare has been around since 1985, we have years of experience in this field and we’re trying to share everything we know in order to make a difference in the world.

We’ve written four great tips that will help your child get more comfortable with the idea of seeing a pediatric nurse. Here’s what they are:

Say It’s Doctor-Recommended

If your child spends a great deal of time in hospitals or clinics, he or she probably looks to doctors as authority figures. By saying your new helper is doctor-recommended, your child may feel more at ease about the prospect, which will make for a smoother transition towards in-home health care.

Tell Your Child It’s Only Temporary

Some kids with chronic health conditions can have days where care is needed continuously. However, during other times you may be able to see to your child’s needs on your own. If this is the case in your household, tell your child that in-home care is only temporary.

Start Small

You can also introduce your child to the concept of in-home care gradually by having a nurse help out only a few hours a day at first. This will allow your child to get to know the person before they’re a fixture in your home, which will facilitate a stronger bond.

Explain That You Need Help

You can also frame your decision as being helpful for you. Being a parent is hard under the best of circumstances, but when your child is ill, every day can seem like an uphill battle. Explain to your child that you need assistance for yourself and that having help will only make life better for the whole family.

Our personal favorite is starting small. Children can easily become scared of things that they don’t understand because they imagine the worst case scenario of what it could be. However, with a small introduction to a pediatric nurse, they’ll quickly realize that it’s not as bad as they think. You’d be surprised at how easy it is to get them to change their minds once you have a J&D Ultracare nurse in your home!

Three Important J&D Ultracare Nursing Techniques

June 15, 2018 By J&D Ultracare

If you’ve been keeping up with J&D Ultracare, you’ll know that we’re writing a lot of articles on Rockland County NearSay! This is a great place for us to spread the word about what we do as nurses. Not only that, but it’s a fantastic way to educate people on the kind of services we provide. Without education, it’s easy to have misconceptions about what nurses do and who they are for.

This week, we wanted to go over three important nursing techniques that we employ at J&D Ultracare. In our NearSay article, the techniques included practicing improvisation, not talking down, and building a relationship. Even though these might seem like no brainers, not everyone strives to provide a quality service like J&D Ultracare.

The article we wrote goes into this in more detail. Here’s an excerpt from the post:

  1. Practice Improvisation

Practicing your improvisation skills will help prevent certain situations from taking a downward spiral. For example, if you’re drawing blood from a child and you see them getting ready to cry, it’s important that you can assess the situation quickly and act accordingly — whether it’s by making jokes or responding in a soothing voice.

  1. Don’t Talk Down to Them

Using a high or sing-song voice is the same as talking down to a child and will make them uncomfortable. Instead, you should squat down so you’re physically at their level, look them in the eye, and speak in a calm but realistic manner. Using their name is more personal and will make them feel at ease.

  1. Build a Relationship

Developing a relationship with your patients will help them grow more comfortable over time. You can do this by asking questions, whether it’s about their day or the movies and shows they like. And, when they answer and talk to you, listen to them.

Five Tips to Get Your Kids Eating Healthy

June 15, 2018 By J&D Ultracare

J&D Ultracare places great importance on health, which is why we have a group of professional nurses that are able to help those in need. We pride ourselves on being the only agency in the Hudson Valley devoted primarily to pediatrics and we’ve been providing this service since 1985!

The work we do is extremely important to making sure kids are healthy, but there are plenty of things that parents can do on their own in order to improve the health of their kids. Perhaps one of the most important things kids should do is eating a healthy diet. Not only is it better for them to eat healthy food, it also makes a big impression on them that impacts how they eat for the rest of their lives. That’s why it’s so important to get kids to eat healthy as their growing up!

We found some great tips on WebMDthat shows how parents can raise food-smart kids with ease. This article goes into great detail, outlining ten tips that will help your kids eat healthier. We’re going to highlight five of those tips here on the blog, but if you want to see the full list, we highly recommend you read the WebMD article by clicking here.

Without further ado, here are five tips to get your kids eating healthy from WebMD:

  1. Avoid placing restrictions on food.

Restricting food increases the risk your child may develop eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia later in life. It can also have a negative effect on growth and development. Instead of banning foods, talk about all the healthy, nutritional options there are — encouraging your family to choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy, while avoiding heavily processed, low-quality junk foods.

  1. Keep healthy food at hand.

Children will eat what’s available. Keep fruit in a bowl on the counter, not buried in the crisper section of your fridge. Remember, your child can only choose foods that you stock in the house. And have an apple for your own snack.

  1. Don’t label foods as “good” or “bad.”

Instead, tie foods to the things your child cares about, such as sports or doing well in school. Let your child know that lean protein such as turkey and calcium in dairy products give them strength for sports. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables add luster to skin and hair. And eating a healthy breakfast can help them keep focus in class.

  1. Praise healthy choices.

Give your children a proud smile and praise when they choose healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, or low-fat dairy.

  1. Don’t nag about unhealthy choices.

When children choose fatty, fried, unhealthy foods, redirect them by suggesting a healthier option.

Instead of regular potato chips and dip, offer baked tortilla chips and salsa.

If your child wants candy, try dipping fresh strawberries in a little chocolate sauce. Too busy? Keep naturally sweet dried fruit at home for quick snacks.

Instead of buying French fries, try roasting cut up potatoes in the oven (tossed in just a bit of oil).

Our favorite tip is keeping healthy foods at hand. It sounds simple, but we find it to be the most effective. For example, if something like a fruit bowl is out on the table instead of a bag of chips, kids will naturally gravitate to the fruit solely because it’s in their reach. It’s that simple!

Five Foods That Your Kids Should Be Eating

June 12, 2018 By J&D Ultracare

J&D Ultracare values the health of kids across the world. That’s why our nurses have been taking care of children as patients since 1985. However, we want to help people outside of our location in the Hudson Valley. That’s why we’ve also written countless blog posts about children’s health on our website.

One of our most recent blog posts was called “Five Tips to Get Your Kids Eating Healthy.” It’s a great post that provides some helpful tips to get your kids to have better eating habits. For example, one of the tips included having healthy foods in reach. If kids see a fruit bowl instead of a bag of chips, they are more likely to eat the fruit than seek out chips that are not in plain sight.

However, we didn’t get to talk about the best types of foods to eat, which is exactly what we want to go over in this post! There’s a fantastic article written by Mom Junction called “Top 10 Foods To Boost Your Kid’s Brain Power”.  The article goes into detail about different kinds of foods that are vital to the development of children and their intelligence. We’re going to go over five of these ten foods, but if you want to learn more, we encourage you to read the full article by clicking here. Otherwise, here’s an excerpt from the article:

  1. Greens

Green leafy veggies like spinach and kale are rich in folate and vitamins, which are linked to brain growth. Your kid may hate these for all the reasons, but you must find ways to sneak these to your kid’s meals. Add it to your kid’s omelettes, wraps and rolls with lettuce and tomatoes.

  1. Yogurt

Yogurt is a great source of vitamin B and proteins, which improve the function and growth of brain tissues. They also contain probiotic bacteria that improve digestive health. A cup of yogurt, blended with some fresh berries makes for a quick and yummy smoothie.

  1. Eggs

Eggs are a rich source of protein, and also contain good amounts of choline; a nutrient that is necessary for the proper function and development of the brain. One of the best facts is that eggs are extremely versatile. Add them to sandwiches, wraps and salads, and you’re done!

  1. Fish

Fish is also considered best food for brain development in children. Fishes like salmon, sardines and tuna are a rich source of vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids. Both the nutrients are responsible to protect the brain against memory loss and age related memory decline. Omega 3 fatty acids also give your kid’s immunity a boost, so make sure you include at least 2-3 servings of this one every week.

  1. Kidney Beans

Kidney beans are thought to be great for those affected by asthma, and serve as a good source of protein for vegetarians. Consumption of kidney beans is believed to boost memory and prevent many lifestyle related disorders.
