Three Ways To Prevent Your Kids From Getting Sick

November 17, 2019 By J&D Ultracare

J&D Ultracare is a nursing agency that has been providing specialized care to the medically fragile population since 1985. We are primarily devoted to pediatrics and our professional nurses take care of children in the comfort of their own homes. Currently, we see patients in Rockland, Dutchess, Putnam County, Westchester, Sullivan, Ulster, and Orange Counties.

On the J&D Ultracare blog, we want to give parents as much knowledge as possible. Today, we want to talk about ways that you can prevent sickness from effecting your kids. There’s an article that we love written on Parents called, “6 Secrets of Kids Who Rarely Get Sick” that goes over this exact topic.

If you find this topic interesting, you can read the full article by clicking here. Otherwise, here are three of our favorite tips from Parents:

  • Keep Hands Clean: Regular hand-washing dramatically reduces the passing of respiratory and gastrointestinal illness, so get your kids in the habit of scrubbing up (or using a hand sanitizer) when they leave preschool or day care, after every playdate, and before they eat. Teach kids to sing “Happy Birthday” to themselves twice before rinsing — scrubbing for 15-20 seconds is key.
  • Be active every day: Studies indicate that regular, moderate exercise can reduce the number of cold and flu episodes that occur over the course of a year by 25-50 percent, possibly by boosting the circulation of infection-fighting cells. “Exercise is better than any advertised cure or miracle,” says Harley A. Rotbart, M.D., Parents advisor and author of Germ Proof Your Kids: the Complete Guide to Protecting (Without Overprotecting) Your Family from Infections
  • Get plenty of ZZZs: Make sure kids stick to an early bedtime. Sleep deprivation nearly doubles the risk of getting a cold or flu, Dr. Rotbart says. Most babies need approximately 14 hours of sleep a day; preschoolers need 11-13 hours of Z’s.

If you have used our nursing services in the past, please consider writing us a review by clicking here. Not only does this help spread the word about J&D Ultracare, you may also be featured in an upcoming testimonial post as well! We write a testimonial post every month, so please check out our blog here for future posts. If you are interested in working for us, you can send us your resume here.
