Health-Tracking Wearable Technology Is Changing How We Raise Children

January 16, 2018 By J&D Ultracare

Technology has quickly become an integral part of our lives. The better it gets over time, the more we rely on it. Technology is also being used in ways we might not expect, such as tracking a baby’s health with a smart pacifier or a biometric-tracking onesie.

This is exactly what Crystal King is using with her 6-month-old baby named Avery in Atlanta, according to a report from CNN. Using this special pacifier and onesie, Crystal can monitor Avery on her cellphone. The app tells her Avery’s breathing, how her body is positioned, her current temperature, and how much sleep she’s been getting.

When Crystal isn’t using the app, it’ll notify her when she need to take an action. For example, Avery needs to be fed every three hours. Since the app has been monitoring Avery for a while, it knows her exact feeding habits and notifies Crystal to feed her every three hours.

While the smart pacifier was a bit difficult to keep in Avery’s mouth, since she kept spitting it out, the biometric-tracking onesie was a lot more natural and worked perfectly for her. Avery loves her new onesie, allowing Crystal to track her at all times through her phone.

While new technology like this is exciting and can make parenting easier, it’s important to make sure that we don’t over rely on it. Dr. Jennifer Shu, a pediatrician at the Children’s Medical Group in Atlanta, says the information learned through this technology is helpful but it should not be a complete substitute for true adult supervision:

“I recommend parents to follow their common sense. If it looks like something that could be safe that you want to try, then maybe talk it over with your pediatrician to see if they have any concerns,” she said. “But if it’s something that looks like it could be uncomfortable or hard to use, you may want to steer away from it.”

J&D Ultracare is dedicated to aiding mentally fragile children in the Hudson Valley, so we find technology like this fascinating. While we do not officially endorse any of these products, it’s great to see technology make new strides in the field of health.
