Six Christmas Activities That Children Will Love

December 20, 2020 By J&D Ultracare

Have you heard of J&D Ultracare? We’re a professional home care nursing agency that has been helping medically fragile children since 1985! J&D Ultracare was the first and is still the only nursing agency dedicated to pediatrics in the Hudson Valley. We also take care our patients in their own homes in order to make sure they are as comfortable as possible. If you want to learn more about J&D Ultracare, give us a call at 845-357-4500.

Christmas is just around the corner! As we get closer and closer, it’s important to involve your children in the festivities. This can be anything from having your kids decorate the house to taking part in fun activities that will put a smile to their face. That’s why we wanted to share six fun holiday activities that you can do with your family this year.

The following activities come from an article on The Tony Robbins Blog called “25 Free Family Holiday Activities.” We wanted to share six activities we loved from the post, but if you want to read more, you can find the full article by clicking here. Here are our favorite activities from the blog:

  1. MAKE GINGERBREAD HOUSES: If you have the time and initiative, skip the pre-fab houses from the supermarket and make your own gingerbread.
  2. HOLIDAY LIGHTS TOUR: Walk or drive to the best-lit houses in town and let everyone decide which houses are their favorites.
  3. PINECONE BIRD FEEDER: This kid-favorite is super simple. Let your child hunt for a pinecone, then slather it in peanut butter and roll it in birdseed. Hang from a tree or bird feeder (preferably near a window) and watch out for delighted birds (or squirrels, as the case may be).
  4. DECORATE YOUR FRONT DOOR (OR YOUR CHILD’S) LIKE A PRESENT: With a bit of wrapping paper from the dollar store and either a ribbon or bow, your front door is transformed into a giant gift!
  5. HOLIDAY MOVIE NIGHT: Gather round with a bowl of air-popped popcorn or pistachios and select your favorite holiday movie for a night that’s sure to please the whole family. Can’t decide which is your favorite? Make it a double-feature!
  6. MAKE ORNAMENTS: Homemade ornaments from the kids are a sweet memory you can pull out year after year, and they cost next to nothing. The gingerbread recipe above will work just as well for little gingerbread men, just remember to punch a little hole it the top for a ribbon to hang before you bake. Or create one of dozens of other child-friendly ornaments.

J&D Ultracare December Testimonials

December 9, 2020 By J&D Ultracare

Welcome to the December J&D Ultracare testimonial post! If you’re new to the blog, we post a new testimonial post every single month featuring reviews from our patient’s families and even our own nurses. They are a joy to read, which is why we love to share them here with our readers. You can check out our November testimonial post by clicking here.

Testimonials are really important because they help spread the word about J&D Ultracare online. When users submit reviews, it allows us to get exposed to new people that do not know about our professional home care nursing services. This helps us hire more nurses and help more patients, allowing us to make a bigger difference in the world.

This month, we wanted to look at two testimonials from our nurses on Google Reviews! Chativa and Lakisha are both incredibly passionate about their jobs because of the impact they had on the lives of their patients. Here’s what they had to say about J&D Ultracare:

Three Ways To Help Your Children Take Medicine

November 20, 2020 By J&D Ultracare

J&D Ultracare has provided skilled nursing services to the medically fragile population since 1985. But here on the blog, we provide helpful tips to parents to help them take care of their kids! Last month, we wrote an article called “Five Tips That Will Help Your Kids Sleep Easier”. If you want to check it out, you can read it by clicking here.

This week, we want to talk about a few different ways your children can take medicine easier. We all know that taking medicine is very important, however, it can be difficult to get a child to cooperate. For example, maybe it’s too difficult for them to take or they don’t understand why they need the medicine. But there are ways to fix that!

These three tips come from the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles! If you want to see more tips on this topic, we recommend you read the full post by clicking here.

  1. Give choices. When kids feel sick, they lose their sense of control, so it’s helpful to give them choices. While taking medication is not a choice, you can give them simple options: How they take it (from a syringe or a cup), When they take it (before or after they get dressed), and where they take it (at the kitchen table or sitting on the couch while watching TV)
  2. Avoid choking. Be mindful of how much your child can swallow at once to avoid choking. Sometimes, a dose should be divided into smaller parts. For infants and smaller children, always squirt medication into the lower cheek rather than the back of the throat to prevent choking. Let your baby swallow before squirting in more. Medication should always be given in an upright or seated position to prevent choking.
  3. Explain why medicine helps. If your child is old enough to understand, explain why he or she needs to take the medication. I recently babysat for my 4-year-old nephew, who was on a course of antibiotics for an ear infection. When I took out the bottle of pink medication, he told me, “No, that’s yucky.” I asked him if he knew why he needed to take the medicine and he shrugged his shoulders. We talked about the medicine helping his ears to feel better so he could go back to preschool and play with his friends, which was just the ticket to get him on board with taking the yucky pink medicine.

Three Ways Children Can Be a Part of Thanksgiving

November 9, 2020 By J&D Ultracare

J&D Ultracare is a professional home care nursing agency that has been helping those in need since 1985! We have helped the medically fragile population in Rockland, Dutchess, Putnam County, Westchester, Sullivan, Ulster, and Orange Counties. See what our clients are saying about us on our testimonials page or give us a call at 845-357-4500 to learn more about us.

It’s important to keep your kids engaged! Activities can help keep children happy, which has a positive effect on their health. That’s why we wrote about “Four Fall Arts & Crafts Ideas For Kids” a couple of weeks ago, which you can read by clicking here. Today, we want to talk about three fun ways your kids can become a part of Thanksgiving!

These great ideas come from an article written by a website called Moms. Their article has ten different ways that kids can involve themselves during Thanksgiving, so if you like what you see below, you can check out their full post by clicking here.

  • HELP CREATE A MEMORABLE TABLE: You can check out any Instagram and Pinterest page to note how many people love creating an aesthetically pleasing Thanksgiving table. While the food is typically beautiful enough, adding candles, colored napkins, and different fall-themed decorations can really set the tone. But since mom and dad have too much on their plate to focus on table settings, ask your little one to decorate the table. Have them draw up a vision and show them ways to make that vision come to life. Whether that’s making their own decorations or making it simple, this can make a child feel proud and useful.
  • MAKE FALL ART FOR DECORATIONS: Creating DIY fall crafts is such a fun and easy thing to do. There are thousands of blogs out there showing how easy it is to turn a pumpkin into a turkey or even a handprint into a turkey. What’s even more festive is going outside and telling your little one to find beautiful colored leaves. You can press the leaves in a book overnight so that they’re flat enough to spread out on the table or your kids can trace the leaves on to paper, creating their own leaf decor.
  • LET THEM HAVE THEIR OWN CUSTOM DISH: This idea is perfect for a child of any age over three or four. Help them go through a list of recipes (pictures really help them since not many kids know what oregano or the like is) and have them choose the one they want most. Give the recipe a new name, like “Lily’s Famous Pumpkin Pie” or “Ben’s Mighty Mac and Cheese” and help them create it. This can become an adorable tradition where each dish has a new name and inspiration after someone in the family. It can also make a child feel special knowing they have a dish with their own name attached to it.
