Three Ways To Reduce A Fever

March 4, 2022 By J&D Ultracare

J&D Ultracare has been providing professional nursing services to those in need for over thirty years. In 1985, we established ourselves as the first agency in the Hudson Valley to specialize in pediatrics. Today, we’re proud to say that we’re still the only agency dedicated to pediatrics in the area!

Here on our blog, we like to give advice to parents that will help keep their kids healthy at home! This week, we wanted to explore different ways to reduce someone’s fever. The easiest solution is to rely on fever reducers, like Tylenol or Advil, but many people don’t realize that there are other things you can do as well!

Below are three safe ways to treat a fever from a website called Very Well Health. If you find these tips interesting, click here to read an article from that site that goes into the topic in more detail.

  • Drink More Fluids. Staying hydrated is really important all the time but even more so when you have a fever. A higher body temperature can lead to dehydration more quickly. Drinking cool liquids can decrease the chances that you get dehydrated and can even help cool off your body.
  • Take a Bath. Taking a bath can help bring down your fever, but the really important part is that it can’t be a cold bath. Although that might seem like it would help more than taking a warm bath, getting in cold or ice water will cause shivering which can actually increase your internal temperature. Getting into a bath that is a comfortable temperature for you will help you relax and could bring down the fever as well.
  • Cool Packs Under the Arms. A commonly used first aid technique to bring down a temperature is to put cool packs under the arms and in the groin area. This is most often used when a person is overheated because of outside factors (such as exercising or being outside for extended periods of time in high heat) but can also help if a fever is high. It’s important to know that the fever may return after removing cool packs. You also shouldn’t use ice packs – cool washcloths are sufficient.

Three Ways An In-Home Nurse Can Help Care For A Special Needs Child

February 25, 2022 By J&D Ultracare

J&D Ultracare is a professional home care nursing agency that has assisted the medically fragile population of the New York Metropolitan area and the Hudson Valley. The testimonials we receive show the lives we’ve touched in those communities, inspiring our nurses to work hard for their patients every day. This inspiration has driven us to help others for over 30 years with our in-home nursing services.

Parents often ask us if their special needs child needs in-home nursing. That’s why we decided to write an article on Rockland County NearSay that helps answer this question! In this post, we identified three key areas where in-home nurses can make a significant difference.

If you’re interested in reading more, you can find the full article here. You can also read more of our NearSay articles, which go over a wide range of topics, by clicking here. Here’s an excerpt from the post:

Routine Care Is Required
If your child can complete several tasks independently—such as eating or using the restroom—and only requires minimal assistance from you, an in-home nurse may not be necessary. However, if your child requires assistance with mobility challenges, personal care, therapy, and managing medical conditions, hiring a pediatric nurse can be a big help. Your nurse will have the training necessary to address specific mental and physical disabilities, giving you peace of mind that your little one’s needs are always met.

You’re Burdened by Burnout
Parents of special needs children will often feel an overwhelming sense of pressure to be the primary caregiver. However, it’s important to remember that taking time to care for yourself can help improve your parenting abilities. If you find yourself burned out by the demands of caring for a special needs child, hiring an in-home nurse can offer you relief.

As professionals that adapt to your specific needs, these nurses can provide assistance whenever it is ideal for you. For example, they can offer respite care every so often whenever you have other responsibilities to address or need to relax. Others may provide more regular support—such as overnight care or during the day while you are at work.

Your Child Is Best in a Familiar Environment
Some special needs kids—especially those that maintain a sense of independence—may prefer to attend a daily care facility where they can socialize with peers and engage in a variety of activities away from home. Other children, however, may be more comfortable being cared for in their familiar home environment where the resources they need are readily available.

Three Ways To Keep Children Safe Outside

February 18, 2022 By J&D Ultracare

J&D Ultracare is a professional nursing agency providing in-home nursing services to the medically fragile population in Rockland, Dutchess, Putnam County, Westchester, Sullivan, Ulster, and Orange Counties. We are passionate about the health of others, which is why we cover a wide range of topics here on our blog.

Happiness is just as important as one’s health, which is why we wrote a post in the past called ‘Ten Outdoor Activities For Your Kids‘. However, it’s extremely important to make sure that your kids are safe when they are playing outside and that’s exactly what we want to talk about today.

This week’s safety tips come from an article we’ve written on a website called Rockland County NearSay. This is a great resource for us to educate people about in-home nursing and help those that are nurses themselves. You can read all of our NearSay articles, which go over a wide range of topics, by clicking here.

‘4 Spring Safety Tips Every Pediatric Nurse Should Know‘ was written on NearSay for nurses that are supervising their patients, but these tips are applicable to any parent as well. Below are three of our favorite tips from the post:

1. Practice Bike Safety
If your pediatric patient is old enough to ride a bike in the driveway or street, discuss bike safety. Ensure their helmet is properly fitted and that they are wearing other necessary protective gear. Talk with their parents to make sure that an adult is supervising them at all times. If the child has an ongoing health condition, ensure they are well enough to ride a bike at any given time.

2. Watch Out for Poison Ivy

Children love to play in the woods, which puts them at risk for contact with poison ivy. Teach your patients what poison ivy looks like, and tell them to avoid plants with three leaves in general. Have calamine lotion and other ointments on hand in case they do come in contact with the plant. You can also talk to parents about spotting the signs of poison ivy contact, such as redness, itching, blisters, and difficulty breathing.

3. Be Prepared for Bee Allergies
As a pediatric nurse, you likely handle several types of allergies daily. Bee allergies will be of concern during the spring. Be sure that their EpiPen® or other allergy medication is up to date and easily accessible. You should also check that their parents keep an EpiPen with them on the go.
